Image Release Note 009: NARA Upload

A historic black and white vertical aerial photo of forested hills. To the left a small stretch of sea can be seen.

Summary

This release centres on Second World War aerial imagery sourced from the ACIU, German Air Force (GAF), JARIC, and US National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) collections, with a strong emphasis on Central and Eastern Europe. The bulk of the material originates from NARA, digitised in partnership with them, and includes both wartime and immediate post-war coverage.

Notably, this batch introduces two small, Luftwaffe sorties over Poland from 1936 and 1939. Additional RAF-flown missions from the mid-1940s complement the dataset. Geographical coverage spans major European theatres including Germany, France, Poland, Austria, Italy, and The Netherlands, extending eastward to Russia, Belarus, and the Balkans. The inclusion of North Africa, China, Hong Kong, and the Middle East (Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates and Oman) reflects the global scope of wartime reconnaissance.
